What began as a series The writing sessions grew into an impressive and personal collection of stories from Zutphen residents with roots all over the world. The collaborative project between BIJ de bieb, Stedelijk Museum Zutphen and writing tutors Lieke Deelstra and Dorine Berkhout culminated in an exhibition at the library. The photographs taken by André Ridder to accompany the stories are on display in the lobby of the Town Hall.

Under the guidance of writing tutors Dorine Berkhout and Lieke Deelstra, twelve participants worked on their autobiographical stories over the course of five sessions. These stories were not only written but also narrated by the participants themselves, often in their mother tongue, supplemented by a Dutch or English version. The result is an impressive collection centred on personal experiences, identity and connection with others. The project was inspired by the contrast between light and dark and the existential questions found in Rembrandt’s etchings, which were on display at the Stedelijk Museum Zutphen.

Photographer André Ridder took portrait photographs of the participants. He has been living in the Netherlands for three years, and this is his second photo series created here. The starting point for this work was Rembrandt van Rijn’s etchings and the idea they embody of a movement from darkness to light. In this series, classical artistic motifs intertwine with the personal stories of the people he photographed. This creates space for reflection on the inner journey, change and the human experience.
