Gregorian chant choir performs atmospheric Marian Vespers

On Sunday 11 October, a centuries-old tradition will be revived. The St. Jan Gregorian Chant Choir from Zutphen will perform an authentic Marian Vespers service. Visitors will be transported by the meditative sounds of Gregorian chant, the oldest musical style of the Western Church. A unique opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy pure tranquillity, reflection and centuries-old melodies.

Vespers traditionally mark the falling of the evening. During this special service, hymns and psalms in honour of Mary take centre stage. October is the second Marian month of the year, alongside May. The choir sings the flowing, monophonic chants entirely a cappella. The acoustics of the Janskerk provide the perfect backdrop, bringing the mystical atmosphere of medieval monasteries tangibly close.
