Sven Hoekstra Exhibition
until 13 September
Exhibition
Some paintings tell a story. Sven Hoekstra’s paintings, on the other hand, are just the beginning of one.
At first glance, his paintings seem familiar: people in a landscape, an encounter, a walk or a moment of silence. But if you look a little longer, you’ll discover that there’s more going on. Reality and imagination blend imperceptibly into one another. Figures appear to encounter one another, yet each seems to inhabit their own world. Humour and melancholy go hand in hand, whilst the paintings leave room for wonder and personal interpretation.
For over fifty years, the Nijmegen-based artist Sven Hoekstra (1945) has been developing a distinctive body of work centred on the human presence. His tranquil visual language, featuring expansive skies, low horizons and seemingly simple scenes, invites the viewer to look closely. Behind the clear depiction lies a world of memories, suggestions and questions.

For this exhibition, seven paintings from a private collection have been brought together. This is a rare opportunity to experience Hoekstra’s work in an intimate setting. It is precisely the gallery’s scale that allows visitors to take their time, discover details and continually find new meanings.
This exhibition is not an invitation to see a lot, but to look more closely.
